Maitland Heritage Association Tournament
Maitland Heritage Tournament by Alix Verge
This tournament started off brilliantly on the Friday afternoon with a block of "rotating doubles" for interested players where 90 minute (stop on the bell) games were played with a different partner for each game. Points were allocated to each player for a win - the greater the margin the more points were allocated. this was great fun, a way to meet players from across NSW and to familiarize oneself with the four courts.
The 4 blocks of singles (arranged according to handicap) began on Saturday in heavy rain - but we all know that a good break beats getting wet hands down. Unfortunately, the rain just did not stop and, by Sunday lunchtime, 2 courts were unplayable so a quick rescheduling: Plan A if 4 courts available by Monday and Plan B if only 2 available. Overnight saw biblical rain fall and Plan C was enacted ~ the tournament was a washout.
Each block had 2 or more players tied in the lead so no winners were announced but the raffle went to a local club member. Thank you to Trevor Black for all the hard work he put in to organizing so well and to Maitland Club members and others from Hunter Valley clubs who came to set hoops, make lunches and - especially - to the referees who got cold and wet but stayed on regardless.
