CA President's Cup
President's Cup - Day 2 by Stephen Mulliner
Day 2 began with Fulford, Maugham and Patel leading with 3/4, followed by Burch, Chapman and Trimmer on 2/4, Avery on 1/4 and Mulliner on 0/4. The lawns have slowed a little so peeling conditions are ideal. Chapman was first to finish with 22qp against Patel. Paddy went to 3b, Samir could not make immediate progress after the contact but, after a couple of missed long shots, got going but came to grief at hoop 5. Finis. Burch went to 4b, Trimmer TPOed him, Jamie did not get going off the contact but a long hit in allowed him to finish +13otp. Mulliner went to 3b against Maugham who went to 4b off the contact but Mulliner then finished +17qp off that contact to break his duck. Avery had a QP on the go against Fulford but had to settle for peg and penult. Fulford hit the long lift and finished +4tp.
After 5 rounds, Fulford leads on his own with 4/5, a pack of Burch, Chapman, Maugham and Patel are on 3/5, Trimmer has 2/5 and Avery and Mulliner are on 1/5. For those giving contact, stopping at 3b is becoming the norm. Interestingly, when a ball is pegged out the single ball player has won 4/7 to date.

Round 6 featured a brisk +26tp 6th turn win for Patel over Fulford, and almost as rapid +18tp win for Burch against Mulliner and two rather slower matches. Avery had another close loss, this time trying a straight TP when the striker's ball bounced out of penult. Chapman made no mistake to win +21qp. Maugham and Trimmer had a pegged out game which almost got pegged down but Pete missed a long shot after a long period of fencing and Dave cleaned up +10.
Round 7 also had two rapid and two less rapid games. Burch and Patel reached 5/7 with a 26tp win over Avery and a 25tp win against Maugham respectively. Mulliner missed a short roquet after 2 with a TP to do and was promptly TPOed and POPed to 4 by Chapman. However, he finished from the contact with the help of a fairly outrageous 5 yard 40 degree hoop 4. Fulford could not finish a sxp against Trimmer who had reached 2 and 2-back. Pete now held his nerve to win in two turns +4tp.
So, at the half-way stage, Jamie Burch and Samir Patel lead with 5/7, closely followed by Paddy Chapman, Robert Fulford and David Maugham on 4/7, Pete Trimmer on 3/7, Stephen Mulliner on 2/7 and Mark Avery on 1/7.

Round 8 featured a rapid two-missed-lifts 26tp win for Fulford over Chapman and a bloodless 26 for Mulliner against Trimmer. Burch moved to 6/8 after QPOing Maugham and surviving a squeeze off the contact. Dave made hoops 1 and 2 and approached 3 from the west end of B baulk, got a bit long and angled and ran it hard down to the south boundary just west of 4. He missed the roquet into C4 and Jamie finished. Avery had the first chance against Patel but stuck in hoop 1. Patel used this to do four POPs on his way to 4-back. Mark hit and went to 1-b and then to 4-b when Samir missed the lift. The second lift was just nicked and Samir made no mistake with his TP.
Burch and Patel now lead with 6/8, followed by Fulford on 5, Chapman and Maugham on 4, Mulliner and Trimmer on 3 and Avery on 1.
