CA Open Championship
Opens: Tuesday by Nick Parish
Good afternoon from a sunny, rainy and windy Surbiton, sometimes simultaneously. This is Nick Parish and I'll provide a bit of commentary when not in play.
I'm outside the hut and will concentrate on Death v Dawson on lawn 1 and Wicks v Hoopgod on lawn 2.

Death v Dawson is two players each on 5 wins out of 7 - you need 6 wins to qualify. James broke down on his sextuplets with three peels done and Jeff is now completing a TP. He is approaching penult with two peels done. Likelihood of his finishing from here is 99.3% according to my expert advisor. Jeff has now peeled rover and is about to finish.
In the other game, Wicks has reached 4 and 3b with Hoopgod 4b and 1.

Jeff has won, and Jimbo has unsurprisingly requested a beer.
Hoopgod is laid up in corner 4 for 1 and 4b. Jack's hoop 3b ball is near hoop 1 and he is taking a long shot at partner 4 yards NE of hoop 6. Misses. James now has a standard TP for the game. I think these two are also both on 5/7.
The big upset this morning was Alison Sharpe's victory over Paddy Chapman. I would be happier about that if it hadn't left Paddy on 5/8, the same as me, putting me in grave danger of having to play him, which I feel is best avoided.

Hoppy has rushed poorly to hoop 1, finishing a yard west of H5. The lawns are fairly easy though. Rolls to a yard straight. Runs it. 4 yard return. Has partner in the middle of the South boundary so not totally straightforward from here.

Hoppy hits the return and croquets it to h3 going to partner. Plays the big roll to 2 and 3. Overhits striker's ball a bit and now has 4-5 yarder at the h2 pioneer. Centre ball and has difficult approach, followed by angled hoop. Copes, and now has TP on a plate.

Hoppy is continuing with his untidy TP. First peel rejected to just short of the jaws. Rush peels 4b after 5. His h6 pioneer is at the peg. This break reminds me of me.

I'm now off to play on lawn 6. If wifi stretches that far, I'll continue commentary from there, although as my eyesight definitely doesn't stretch that far it will be on different games. Meanwhile Hoopgod is continuing with his ropey TP. One peel done, approaching 1b. Definitely not in the bag yet.

I'm back.

Hoppy did not complete his ropey TP against Wicks but won anyway and has qualified. Wicks went on to lose to Chapman and so isn't through yet. He's now playing Robert Wilkinson who lost his first four games and then won the next five.

I'm watching James Death on a sextuple against Luc Berthouze. Luc got in first and went to 4b but then declared a still ball on a take-off. James went to 1b and Luc missed. James is for six and 3b, sending peelee to 3b going to his h6 pioneer which is two yards NW of h5.

Other games... Nelson, who is having a great tournament, is having a ding-dong battle with Sam Murray.

James hasn't got his rush to h6 and has a 13 yard roll-up. 2 yard straightish hoop. Slams through. That's the second very good hoop he's run. Or if you're being uncharitable, the second hoop he's approached very poorly. About to peel 3b going to 1b. Big shot.

James has over-approached 2b and failed an unrunnable hoop off Luc's hoop 1 ball, yellow. Yellow can only see about half of black, though. Luc could take this on or play with his 4b ball which is at 4b along with James's peelee. Does neither. Lifts yellow to B-baulk and makes double at about 9 yards for a standard TP wi a pioneer at his hoop. Misses! Disaster. James is now taking his forward ball to peg.

Scratch that, James has just made 4b and had a leave. Getting scappy now. I'll rove.

In other news, Wilkinson is on a 4bb to beat Wicks and qualify after six straight wins following four successive defeats. The Swiss gambit?

Cumming is 1 and 4b v Plummer (1 and 2). Ormerod has the first break against Vincent and goes to 4b giving contact. All games in the main event are super advanced, remember.
Goacher has he first break against Alison Sharpe. Surprise, surprise, it's a slow one. In the Morrow/Murray battle, Nelson has reached peg and 4b. Sam is for penult and 4b and badly needs to hit this lift. He doesn't. Can Nelson finish from here?

Nelson clangs rover with victory in sight. Time has been called. Nelson is peg and peg. Sam has just run 4b and his other ball is for penult so he needs peels. Plays an excellent roll and can now rush partner plum in front of penult.
Wilkinson has beaten Wicks to qualify. Wicks has apparently lost five in succession after winning his first five. It included a to of tough games, mind.

Murray takes on the Irish peel at penult and although the front ball goes through, striker's ball unaccountably spins to the side nelson wins.
That's it from me. bye.
