Steuber Prize AC
Steuber Prize AC by William Mead
We're back at it again after a late finish last night. Ian Harshman won third place with a grueling three game match against Leo McBride. The match ended just before the sun went down with the temperature dipping into the low 40s. In the B flight finals Susan Fulford outlasted Gerald Shugar with two 7-6 finishes to advance to the finals. Due to the lateness of the semi-final they played a 19 point game with Bill winning, in the dark, 10 to 9. Congratulations to Bill and Susan.
The Association portion of our event started at 8 AM with the temperature hovering at 40 and wind gusting. Danny Huneycutt opened with a quick triple over Mike Taylor winning 26tp-8. Mike hit in on Danny's first leave but couldn't keep his break together. The wind took a too delicate approach shot just out of angle leaving Mike no options but to retreat. "Sandy" Bob VanTassell hit it at match time to snatch a victory from Johnny Mitchell 20-19. Derek Wassink declined to attempt a triple on Mike Todorovich setting two diags before pegging out on Todo.
In the most interesting of the opening matches Sharif Abdelwahab, perhaps with a bit of too much of revenge from yesterday's GC final, hit it on Robert with the fourth ball and ran to 4-back setting a diag. Robert missed his hit and Sharif ran his back ball round getting the 4-back peel. He struggled at the pentultimate peel. Declined the peel choosing to just score the hoop with his back ball. He dribbled through leaving himself without a makeable racquet and shot off the court.
Again Robert missed the hit in so Sharif took his back ball to rover leaving himself for Pent and Peg. Another miss so Sharif ran to peg but missed the croquet peg shot and chose to play one ball. Robert finally hit in but had a dodgy wicket run at 3 and missed his roquet leaving Sharif a six yarder at the peg. Sharif missed! Robert then ran the back ball to peg giving Sharif one last try. Robert then finished the match.
In the battle of the B flight Peter Just bested Templton Peck +21, Russell Dilley outlasted Gerald Shugar 10-8, Susan Fulford was victorious over Missy Ramey (her first AC event). In the battle of the mans Bill Hartman took down Ian Harshman 21-12. Ian said coming off the lawn that he was having so trouble adjusting from yesterday's Golf matches.

On the under card, Russell Dilley flummoxed Peter Just. Seems that Russell had the hit in genie on his side performing six 20+ yarders holding on until the bitter end. Then again Peter shouldn't leave so many double targets, never the less Peter did peg out in final turn for a 26-11 win. It seems as if Dilly Ball has a successor to Dilley Ball. David McCoy continues on his streak of 10 hoops besting Templeton Peck as time ran out. For a big upset Bill Daigle, in his first AC tournament, bested Bill Hartman with a 19-6 win. Ian Harshman bounced back with a win over Susan Fulford. Ian did have a go at a tp but didn't get far.
Once again, Robert entertained. He jawsed his three back peel attempt. Things seemed fine until his take off from setting his four back peel took a wind aided curve roqueting yellow back out of 3-back. This caused him a bit of a control issue as he had to take-off peel yellow while going to black at two-back. Yellow ran well but ended three yards shy of four-back and two yards toward the east boundary. After a six yard roquet to 2-back Robert had a tough time of setting yellow to four-back leaving himself with a very tough 75 degree 25 yard roquet back to three back. He shot a good rush leaving red fifteen feet west of 3=back. After an expertly played roll up he ran long failing to get the forward rush. Facing a straight triple Robert ran into trouble again at rover when he failed to obtain a high percentage peel position. Fulford got the tough close angled peel with the yellow ball barely through the hoop and red with a very close jump. He missed the jump.
His opponent, Mike Todorovich failed to profit from a cluster of four balls so Robert finished the game 26-2.
In other action "Sandy" Bob Van Tassell took Danny Huneycutt 26-9. Guess Sandy Bob needs to concentrate on his AC or change his moniker to Wrong Way Bob. Good win.

Leo and Johnny had a grand game. Johnny jumped out and ran to 4-back with Leo hitting in. Leo ran it around and set a diag. After a bit of onsies and twosies Leo took is back ball to peg setting a tough leave with Johnny needing to hit corner to corner. Which he did! In last turn Johnny put Leo into his first loss 26-21. Sorry Folks but I cannot be everywhere all the time but this summary was from Leo.
Chris Patmore beat Derek Wassink 26-1 but had a exasperating time at the four back peel. First he dribbled it through. Then when he revisited it he attempted to knock it away from the hoop only to put it back in the wicket. $#^&&. On the next shot he only put it further back into the hoop. Musta been a magnet there, no? In the end Chris won out. Sandy Bob and Mike Taylor had a great back and forth game with VanT 22 to Mike's 19.
In the last round Robert finally got his sxp against Derek. Tiger missed Robert's stuff on wicket one and it was over after that had Derek hit he would have had Robert's break and who knows? Should, Would. Could. Badda Bing, Badda oops!
It is late, with an early morning. See all after some hoop setting. Omlet making and all of the rest. One last round then off to match play playoffs and plate or two or three won't know until they shop up or not.

Ah, warm weather again. Robert celebrated more seasonable weather with a fifth turn tp over Chris. Chris is thinking of having his third shot at the bar.

The semis have started with Robert, once again, running a fifth turn triple. Bob missed his third shot at the outset of game two. Robert missed the long shot at the double. Bob had a bad rush at Robert's corner ball, then failed to get the rush to one. His long roll didn't produce the result he wanted so he rejoined partner on the east boundary near wicket four. Robert hit the leave, ran to 4 back and set a diag. Bob took the short shot at the leave and missed, badly nicking wicket four. Robert is now heading for another tp.
In the other semi, Chris Patmore left a 14 yard tice west of wicket one and three yards off the boundary. Danny responded with a shot just out of corner four. Chris took corner two. Danny hit his partner and proceeded to assemble a break only to realize he had set it for wicket three, not one! So.....he rejoined partner wide. Chris missed the leave and now Danny is working the court.
