NSW Men's Open Singles
Tournament Format by David Stanton
The NSW Men's Open Singles has attracted a field of 20 players, requiring us to make use of the two lawns at nearby Strathfield Croquet Club in addition to the three lawns at NSW Headquarters, Mackey Park, Tempe. There will be three playing sessions at each venue each day, with the first games each day starting at 8 am. Later sessions will start as soon as lawns and players are available.
On Friday, players will be grouped into five 4-man blocks, A to E, each block with approximately the same total DG. Three of these blocks will play at Tempe, and the other two at Strathfield. Each block will play a round robin.
On Saturday, players will once again be grouped into five 4-man blocks, J to N. Blocks J to M will be made up of the first three place-getters from blocks A to E, plus a "lucky loser". The other 4 fourth-place players will play in block N. All blocks will be arranged so that no player plays somebody on Saturday who he has already played on Friday. As for Friday, three blocks will play at Tempe and two at Strathfield.
On Sunday, the winner and runner up from each of blocks J to M will play in the "X" knockout, with a "Z" event for first round losers and a 3rd/4th playoff for second-round losers. Losers in the first round of the "Z" will play off for 7th and 8th. The "X" and "Z" events will be played at Tempe.
3rd-placed players from blocks J to M plus the best two 4th-placed players from these blocks will be joined by the winner and runner-up from block N to play a "Y" knockout. First round losers from the "Y" will go into a "W" knockout and second round losers will play off for 11th and 12th. Losers in the first round of the "W" will play off for 15th and 16th. The "Y" and "W" events will be played at Strathfield.
The remaining 4th-placed players from blocks J to M, along with the 3rd- and 4th-placed players from block N will play a 4-man round robin at Tempe for the Plate.
