NZ Open - Singles KO
Bits of the 32 and round of 16 by Jarrod Coutts
Nearly 11am and I've strolled into the club Lawns are looking pretty green and already I've seen a number of errors. From what I've seen so far throughout the event, the quality has been pretty average due to a range of the lawn speed (ranging between 8-12 seconds dependant on weather), atkins hoops and the players ability.
I'm sitting in the clubhouse and Bryant has just finished a straight double to complete a TP and take the first game against Felix 21TP

Ritchie has just tied his match with Harps so Edmund has another long wait before his round of 16 match. Other 16 matches that have already begun are;
Bulloch vs Jones; Bulloch game up and has first break in the 2nd.
Hogan vs Mulliner; I've sent the scout for an update

In the rounds of 32 still;
Morrow vs Robinson is in the second game after the first went to time. Morrow is currently Peg and rover vs 4 and 4 so we will be having a 3rd round thriller shortly.
Christie vs Wise I was double banking with yesterday. Wise took the first and Christie looks to be in control in the 2nd? I'll send the scout to get an update on the clippage.
Tahurangi vs Ritchie has just gone to a 3rd game.
Commarieu vs Wickham is now in the 3rd game with the frenchman on 1b and 1 vs 4b and 1
Update on Mulliner vs Hogan; Mulliner is 5 and 4b vs 2 and 4 in game 1. I'm assuming they started at 8.30 so they have 90 minutes left.

A very brief overview from the event.
Missed messages about the format - as usual, there will never be a 'correct' answer but there has been a lot of talk about how a burridge swiss would have been better. It will be interesting to see what happens next year if there is a similar entry Rumour has it, is that the Open will be at the mount rather than Christchurch which will limit the international entries.
The youth has been very exciting to see. Edmund has been the pick of the players from my perspective. It's awesome to see them doing so well but I'm very much looking forwar to their performance in the later stages.
Top players; I can't see anyone going past Brant at this stage. Mulliner, Bulloch and Hakes have been the other strong performers from what I've seen but Michael could be a dark horse with a big improvement since the doubles.

Great shot from Morrow! Bring on the 3rd
21 Jan 2016 11:20AM (Tournament); 4 Readers
Harps has first break in g3 vs Ritchie. Both players have made errors during the match but I would back Harps as the favourite to take the 3rd

I've just had a report that the lawns are playing at 11 seconds. Definitely some brown patches around hoops which has caused several players significant difficulty.
Mulliner has just made 5 with lots of work to do for a break. Gets a rush out of 5 and finishes 1y N of 6 with Hogan S of c2 and just off the WB a few yards N of h1
21 Jan 2016 11:24AM (Tournament); 4 Readers
Attempts to roll partner down to c1 going to W on the WB but I think clipped the hoop with strikers ball in the shot and finishes level with the peg maybe 4yE of WB. Contemplating cornering or taking 10 yarder at W... taking the 10 yarder... misses into c1. Hogan now has a 3 yarder on the inlawn ball and will take the innings but will be doing well to pick up a break.

Wickham not approaching 4b and in control
21 Jan 2016 11:29AM (Tournament); 4 Readers
Hogans leave (for 2 and 4) is Mulliners h6 ball 5y E of h6, and the 4b ball 3y S of h4 open on Green with Hogan laid up in c2 playing for the wire from g. I'm think it's a rush for his h4 ball..
21 Jan 2016 11:32AM (Tournament); 5 Readers
Wise has just made rover with one ball in the 2nd vs Christie. Partner may be on 4b. It looks as if Christie has a ball on the peg as well but I can't see his other clip.
21 Jan 2016 11:34AM (Tournament); 5 Readers
Hogan left a rush for his h4 ball but it was pointing at h2. Mulliner went into c3 with his h6 ball. A good few shots needed for a break here.
21 Jan 2016 11:37AM (Tournament); 5 Readers
We think Christie is Penault and Peg vs h2 and 4b. I don't know what I saw earlier.. I'm sure he ran rover at some point. Time must nearly be up so should be another 3rd round thriller and a nice little wait for Aiken.

Hogan misses a leave from Mulliner but it seems as Mulliner had the rush laid for his 4b ball? I'm guessing he is going to be making another leave. Great to see Hogan back in the game.

Hogan hit's a 20 yarder for one last break. Break to the peg and peg off is what he needs.. lot's of work to do first but has made h4
21 Jan 2016 12:36PM (Tournament); 8 Readers
If he get's the to peg and pegs off, that would put him 15-14 ahead if I can do maths (which has been proven in the past that I can't)
21 Jan 2016 12:38PM (Tournament); 9 Readers
Has a very tough approach to h5 from 4y SE. Shot for the break!

Mulliner misses 12 yarder I think? His h6 ball is on EB 2y S of peg and his 4b ball is 1ft S of c3. Hogan is on a 2ball break and under approaches 1b Shooting at ball in c3. misses

Hogan has stuck in 3b.. do we have our first potential jam?
21 Jan 2016 1:55PM (Tournament); 7 Readers
Hogan is 4b and 1 vs 1 and 3. Mulliner has the innings. Much better progress than g1
21 Jan 2016 2:09PM (Tournament); 8 Readers
Hogans 3b ball was not jammed - though it must have been very close as there was another question about that hoop yesterday. I didn't see the finish, but Mulliner didn't have a short shot so my assumption is that he missed, Hogan made 3b and then set a leave. Mulliner now on a break approaching h4
21 Jan 2016 2:13PM (Tournament); 8 Readers
Morrow now has a break after Alison missed a 3 yarder into a corner. Approaching h3 with partner on 3 vs 4b and 6. This is a very important turn in the scheme of the match.
