Cammeray Birthday Tournament (Hcp)
Event description by David Stanton
ORDER OF PLAY
1. Block Play
There will be four blocks of four players, and each block will play a round robin on Friday and in the first session on Saturday.
2. Elimination Knockout
Following block play, the final series will be played, as set out below:
(a) All players will play a modified double-elimination knockout, progressing to the Final on Sunday afternoon.
(b) Block winners and runners-up will need to lose twice to drop out of the race to the final. Third and fourth placed players will need to win all their knockout games to reach the final.
(c) Players who drop out of the main knockout in the first or second rounds will go into the Plate competition, with the Plate Final on Sunday afternoon. The plate will be run as a seeded knockout tournament.
(d) All players will get at least 5 and at most 9 games over the three days.
3. Determining Block Positions
For a block of 4 players, only the following combinations of wins are possible:
(a) 3, 2, 1 and 0 – finishing order is straightforward
(b) 3, 1, 1 and 1 – winner is clear, runner-up/3rd /4th require a 3-way tie-breaker
(c) 2, 2, 1 and 1 – winner/runner-up and 3rd /4th require a tie-breaker
(d) 2, 2, 2 and 0 – fourth is clear, winner/runner-up/3rd require a 3-way tie-breaker
The tie-breaker employed will be net hoops, then result of game(s) between players involved. For case (c) above, this will result in clear place-getters being identified. For cases (b) and (d) it will, unless all 3 players are equal on net hoops. In this case, there will be a “hit the peg” shootout starting from 10 yards, with each player having 5 shots. The player with the greatest number of hits wins, and the player with the least number of hits comes 3rd. If two or more players are equal, a further tie-break between those players takes place, moving a yard closer if they are tied on 3 hits or less, or a yard further away if they are tied on 4 hits or more.
PRIZEMONEY
We are very grateful to club member Maureen Cope, who has supported this event by providing prizes for several years. This year, Maureen has donated $800 to be used as prize-money, and this will go $500 to the winner, $200 to the runner-up and $100 to the winner of the Plate.
