NSW GC Men's Open Singles Championship
Format by Peter Freer
21 players playing initially in three blocks of 7, followed by knockouts for the championship, a Y event and a Plate. Six games from Blue block and three games from Black block will be played on Friday afternoon, allowing an extra two sessions of play to be scheduled for Sunday afternoon. All block games will be best of 13 points.
Following completion of the round robin games, the top 5 from each block plus the “best” 6th place will enter the X knockout. The first round of this knockout will be single games, best of 19 point (bo3 if time permits). Winners continue in the X and losers go into the Plate, joining the 5 remaining players who did not qualify for the X. Second round losers in the X will play in the Y event, semi-finals and a final. The remaining rounds of the X and both rounds of the Y will be best of 3 matches, 13 point games. The quarter finals of the X will start on Sunday afternoon, with at least one game being completed, and the second (and third, if required) games will be played on Monday morning.
DETERMINING BLOCK FINISHING POSITIONS
The winner is the player
i) Who has won the most games;
ii) If there is a tie on games won, consider only the games between the tied players, and rank these players based on number of wins in these games alone;
iii) If there is still a tie on games won, rank the equal players on net points:
iv) If there is still a tie, rank the players on points scored;
v) If there is still a tie, rank the players by lot.
Other placegetters will be determined in the same manner.
In determining the “best” 6th placed player, those players will take place in two playoff games.
The “Most Advantaged Player” (the player with the greatest number of wins or (if wins are equal) the highest net hoops) will have a bye, while the other two play. The winner of this game then plays the MAP, and the winner of that game will enter the “X” knockout in position 16.
These playoff games will be for 1 hoop, starting from corner 2 for hoop 2.
Players who finished in the top 5 of their block will then be numbered 1 to 3 for block winners (in WR order), 4 to 6 for runners-up (WR order) and so on up to 13 to 15 for 5th placed players. These players will be placed into a normal 16-man draw in order, starting with block winners,
avoiding first round block clashes and ensuring that each quarter of the draw has at least one player from each block.
The 5 players (players 17 to 21) who do not qualify for the X will go into a 16-man Plate KO, in positions 9 to 13. Losers in the first round of the X will enter the Plate KO in positions 1 to 8.
