Golf Croquet Innovations 2025

Tournament Format by Jamie Burch

2 Shot

Earning a 2nd Shot
The 1st shot of any ball can be used for any purpose traditional to GC
(i.e., scoring, blocking, clearing, and positioning).
Additionally, If the 1st shot involves a roquet, then a 2nd shot is earned and it too can be used for any purpose.

The Intrigue
Once earned, a 2nd Shot adds new strategic dimensions to play including the ability to use another ball as a "pioneer" (hit a ball and then score) to aid in offense, or to use it as a "Stepping-Stone" (hit one ball to gain access to clear another or to hit the same ball again) to aid in defense.

Scoring
One point is earned at each hoop. Hoops are played in traditional order with the winning score being 5 points.

AC-GC

Either-Ball Rule
A team can play either ball each turn.

Period of the Current-Hoop and Scoring
Each hoop has its "Period". Either team can score the point at the Current Hoop but only if both of its balls have played in that Period.

"Breaking Serve" is Required to Win
Winning requires accumulating at least 5 points and scoring at least one more time when Oppo goes first to a hoop (i.e., "Breaking his Serve") than Oppo does when you go first. This requirement is difficult to fulfill and encourages simultaneous play at multiple hoops -what we call "Gambling".

Important Rules
(i) Blue/Black always play first to the 1st Hoop; and (ii) The losing team always plays first to the next hoop. Under these rules it is fair to both teams that winning requires Blue/Black to reach at least 5 points and be ahead by at least 2 to win, while Red/yellow can win by reaching at least 5 points and being ahead by at least 1.

DD [Dueling Duos]

Both balls must score
Blue/Black "duel" with Red/Yellow in GC color rotation to be the first team to score both balls at the Current Hoop. Balls that have scored stay in rotation, switching from Offense to Defense.

Hoop order by random draw
The Current Hoop is determined by random draw with the 1st chosen before a game begins and subsequent ones revealed immediately after hoops are made.

Winning extra points
Each hoop generates 3 points. A team earns a single point each time its scores the current hoop.
If teams alternate scoring, then the winning score at a hoop will be (2-1) or (1-2). However, a 3rd point is awarded to a team that makes the hoop with both of its balls before the other team scores at all, generating scores of (3-0) or (0-3).

First to 8 points wins
The first team to 8 points wins and therefore a game will involve play at no more than 5 hoops.

3-Shot

Roquet Required
A hoop can be made only after Striker roquets one of the other balls.

Available shots
A ball gets two shots each turn. In addition, a 3rd is earned if there is a roquet on the 1st or 2nd shots, or on both.

Strategies

Scoring occurs in one of two ways: (i)
Roquet/Lag/Hoop - a long roquet with the 1 shot, is followed by a lag to the Current-Hoop with the 2nd shot, and then a hoop shot with the 3rd; or (ii) Lag/Roquet/Hoop - a long lag with the 15 shot to a ball left near Current Hoop, is followed by a gentle roquet with the 2" shot, and a hoop shot with the 3rd
Failure during initial shots leads to defensive play that seeks to isolate the Danger-Ball

Scoring

One point is earned at each hoop. Hoops are played in traditional order with the winning score being 5 points.
