WCF AC World Championship

Playoff Alain Giraud vs Steve Jones by John-Paul Moberly

Hi everyone, just an update to bring you up to speed, Ned Wilson beat Steve Jones with a nice triple earlier this morning to confirm his place in the knockout. This left Steve needing to beat Alain 2-0 in games to progress, and Alain simply needing to win one game.

06 Feb 2018 1:36PM (Tournament); 39 Readers

Steve won the first, leaving a sudden death decider game to decide the final qualification place in this block!

06 Feb 2018 1:37PM (Tournament); 40 Readers

In this 3rd game, Steve went round first making 9, Alain then followed with a 9 hope break of his own. Steve missed the lift and Alain started his second break. Tried a couple of times for the tp, but it wasn’t happening so has just concentrated on going round to peg.

06 Feb 2018 1:38PM (Tournament); 36 Readers

We join the game with Alain having just ran penult with red, yellow for 4b. Steve has blue on 1 and black for 4b

06 Feb 2018 1:39PM (Tournament); 37 Readers

Positions Y by peg ready for spread, takes off from K to U by rover. Cleanly runs rover too far.. nervy return roquet coming up...

06 Feb 2018 1:41PM (Tournament); 39 Readers

Alain misses...R finishes 3 yards North of 6

06 Feb 2018 1:41PM (Tournament); 41 Readers

U by rover, K and Y by peg

06 Feb 2018 1:42PM (Tournament); 45 Readers

Steve weighing up his options...

06 Feb 2018 1:42PM (Tournament); 45 Readers

Picks up U and takes to b baulk, looks like he’ll be shooting at R

06 Feb 2018 1:43PM (Tournament); 44 Readers

Steve hits!

06 Feb 2018 1:44PM (Tournament); 43 Readers

Good roquet there, big one in the match!

06 Feb 2018 1:44PM (Tournament); 43 Readers

Sends R just North of 2, uses Y to set up rush to 1 with K. Standard triple chance here! No tps for him this tournament though..

Update on Morrow vs Coutts, Morrow 3 and rover in break, Coutts 1 and 4b

06 Feb 2018 1:46PM (Tournament); 46 Readers

Steve (with U) makes 1 and 2. Hard to give an opinion on a 4bsll break. Looks in good nick. Making 3 with K ready to peel...

06 Feb 2018 1:49PM (Tournament); 44 Readers

Stunning weather here in Paraparaumu, even a kunar backcdrop to the earlier morning...a spoonbill flies overhead during Steve’s peel attempt, lovely stuff!

06 Feb 2018 1:51PM (Tournament); 42 Readers

Should have said lunar above. Jones just makes the peel, makes 4 after a good rush and then rushes R to south boundary

06 Feb 2018 1:54PM (Tournament); 42 Readers

Alain waiting and ready to pounce on any Jones error

06 Feb 2018 1:55PM (Tournament); 41 Readers

Jones makes 5 and has R and K all set for the penult peel after 6

06 Feb 2018 1:57PM (Tournament); 45 Readers

Looking very solid here Jones. He does have 4 Mac appearances after all

06 Feb 2018 1:59PM (Tournament); 48 Readers

Peel (K) sticks right in front of penult. Goes to Y pioneer for 1b via a rush with R to North boundary and stop shot R to 2b

06 Feb 2018 2:00PM (Tournament); 46 Readers

Jones has a Dawson Millenium mallet, gold with aluminium. A very rare mallet these days, apparently very heavy indeed!

06 Feb 2018 2:01PM (Tournament); 50 Readers

Good anecdotes from Ned Wilson here...great mallet intel from him

06 Feb 2018 2:02PM (Tournament); 51 Readers

No rush peel for Jones here, doesn’t try the peel going to R for 2b

06 Feb 2018 2:03PM (Tournament); 50 Readers

Leaves K nicely in front of penult, makes 2b off R

06 Feb 2018 2:03PM (Tournament); 51 Readers

Nelson has just saved his break by hitting a 15 yarder, hammers through 3b though, 9 yard return roquet....HITS! Nervy here in Paraparaumu

06 Feb 2018 2:05PM (Tournament); 50 Readers

3b roll peel through now penult for Jones, plays very nicely and cleanly peels K to level with rover. Almost wires himself on Y, but roquet and is ready to make 3b

06 Feb 2018 2:06PM (Tournament); 52 Readers

Doesn’t approach well...leaves a yard or two hoop, MISSES! Alain back in!

06 Feb 2018 2:07PM (Tournament); 53 Readers

Jones has left K by rover, U wired from K by 3b. Uses his lift and picks up Y, thought he’d shoot from where Y was at R in front of his 4b hoop, however picks up Y and shooting at K from A baulk...misses and finishes 2 yards out of corner 3

06 Feb 2018 2:09PM (Tournament); 55 Readers

What is Jones going to do?

06 Feb 2018 2:18PM (Tournament); 59 Readers

Cadbury’s Dairy Milk Top Deck helping us through the tension, and combo white and milk chocolate for the uninitiated

06 Feb 2018 2:19PM (Tournament); 58 Readers

Jones is on 4b, making with U off Y, only just makes it! But just is enough

06 Feb 2018 2:20PM (Tournament); 61 Readers

Not going to finish this turn though, K is still in corner 1. Jones croquets Y to well beyond rover and can now rush R to nice position for making penult

06 Feb 2018 2:21PM (Tournament); 58 Readers

Takes off to K, rolls K to near peg, hits two yard roquet on Y with U to the side of rover

06 Feb 2018 2:24PM (Tournament); 63 Readers

06 Feb 2018 2:25PM (Tournament); 65 Readers

06 Feb 2018 2:31PM (Tournament); 67 Readers

HITS

06 Feb 2018 2:31PM (Tournament); 67 Readers

Huge roquet for Alain

06 Feb 2018 2:32PM (Tournament); 67 Readers

Great take off to corner 2, roquets K and rushes U to near the peg. Can Alain get a nice set up for his hoop and put the pressure on Jones?

06 Feb 2018 2:35PM (Tournament); 62 Readers

He peels off U, leaving K in corner 2. We have a 3 ball ending folks!

06 Feb 2018 2:36PM (Tournament); 62 Readers

Alain still standing considering his options

06 Feb 2018 2:37PM (Tournament); 60 Readers

06 Feb 2018 2:38PM (Tournament); 60 Readers

06 Feb 2018 2:43PM (Tournament); 51 Readers

Steve is shooting at rover form 1 yard, slightly angles, runs to the South boundary, good hoop!

06 Feb 2018 2:44PM (Tournament); 51 Readers

What does he do now? Alain is joined up and ready to finish his Y from 4b

06 Feb 2018 2:44PM (Tournament); 50 Readers

Alain has covered the shot at the peg (if Open) with his R and Y. Think the best option is to middle of East boundary?

06 Feb 2018 2:45PM (Tournament); 49 Readers

Ha I know more about this game than I thought, that’s exactly what Steve does

06 Feb 2018 2:47PM (Tournament); 50 Readers

Alain roquets R with Y and takes off to K. Rushes K to North boundary. Sends K to south of hoop 4. Deciding what to do next..

06 Feb 2018 2:54PM (Tournament); 50 Readers

Unlucky for Alain to leave a double with his ball and the peg

06 Feb 2018 2:54PM (Tournament); 49 Readers

One of those matches where it’s a shame someone has to lose. Sorry to see Alain knocked out, if he plays in the plate he’ll be a strong contender

06 Feb 2018 2:55PM (Tournament); 46 Readers

But well done Steve, controlled play sees him through to the knockout of the AC worlds on home soil

06 Feb 2018 2:56PM (Tournament); 47 Readers
